By Tara Swadley Body piercing has long been popular among certain cultures around the world and had long ago made itself a part of many American subcultures. As piercing becomes more understood more people are looking for unique ways to accessorize with body piercing jewelry. But this isn't just any body jewelry; this goes into your skin and as such, special care is needed to prepare for body piercing. Read the complete article: Pittsburgh Examiner

By Marc Body modification is a broad category that covers anything from socially acceptable ear piercings to culturally mandated circumcisions, but there’s a small niche in this category that involves the most extreme manipulation of the human body. Some trendsetters treat their bodies like a work of art and some cultures are simply handing down tradition, but all of the following examples are shocking in their own way, so brace yourself. Here are 10 shockingly extreme body modifications that aren’t for the faint of heart (or stomach). Read the complete article: Web Urbanist
Oshawa tattoo artist inks his way to national awards - Tue, 17 Nov 2009 20:00:00 -0800
By Jillian Follert Oshawa, Ontario - For as long as he can remember, Joel Montfort has loved to draw, sketch and doodle on whatever he can get his hands on. As a kid, his artistic aspirations sometimes landed him in trouble. "I really liked to draw skulls and demons and flames, that kind of thing. I went to a French Catholic school, so they weren't very impressed with that," he said. "I got kicked out of a lot of art classes." Today, the 28-year-old Oshawa man's art is winning him national awards. He's only been working as a tattoo artist for about four years and didn't expect much when he entered some of his work in the first annual Ottawa Gatineau International Tattoo Expo, which ran from Oct. 23 to 25. Ed Hardy Temporary Tattoos Break New Ground - Tue, 17 Nov 2009 19:00:00 -0800
By Henry Schlesinger High fashion and bulk vending would seem to have little in common, except that one of today's best-selling temporary tattoo lines is based on the edgy designs of Ed Hardy, the California tattoo artist whose incorporation of Japanese tattoo artistry into American styles led to a variety of successful ventures in haute couture and celebrity marketing. Vending Supply inc., which acquired the license four years ago, has seen the popularity of the license build inside and outside bulk vending. Launching its sixth Ed Hardy series, the firm recently rolled out the Ed Hardy PINK series, a softer version of the designs. Read the complete article: Vending Times
Interview with a Goth - Mon, 16 Nov 2009 20:00:00 -0800
By Sushmita Diana Suhaimi I wanted to understand why some people go gothic and why some are called emo, so I spoke to my friend, Dhania Zoe As’ad, 14, about it. Zoe said: “Goths are normal people who choose to like different things. Personally, I think goths are cool. It’s good that we are expressing our feelings. But I don’t support being physical about it. I think goth is another ridiculous label people are given just because they are different. People have to understand the concept of goth. Most people become one because they have been spurned by ‘mainstream’ society as the way they want to live don’t fit with how most people are told to live their lives. Goths are free-thinkers.” Read the complete article: New Straits Times
Ear Spiral - Mon, 16 Nov 2009 19:00:00 -0800
An ear spiral is a coiled piece of jewelry spiraling through multiple ear piercings. From a piercing point of view, they are no different than normal piercings. That said, the placement of the piercings needs to be EXACTLY lined up with the spacing of the coil, and this spacing needs to be consistent from start to finish, allowing the jewelry to be "screwed" (as in rotated) into place. Piercing Etiquette - Sun, 15 Nov 2009 20:00:00 -0800
By Alex Rajewski To give you some of my personal history, I had wanted a lip ring since I was in high school, but I worked as a waiter. Had I actually gotten a lip ring then, I would have been fired faster than you can say, “Welcome to Red Robin.” Throughout my first year at Drake, I wrestled with the decision to get pierced or not. On the one hand, I liked the way it looked, I wanted the experience it and I also wanted to shock my family and friends. On the other hand, I wanted to be employed in the future and taken seriously as an intelligent, hard worker. I finally decided on the last day of my first year that I would just get it done and deal with the fallout later. At the tattoo parlor, the piercer told me all of the possible complications of the piercing – horrible, horrible things that would make even Quentin Tarantino cringe. I kept my nerve and walked out 10 minutes later with a shiny, new lip ring. In case you are wondering, it didn’t hurt in the slightest. Read the complete article: The Times-Delphic
Body art that’s on the cutting edge - Sun, 15 Nov 2009 19:00:00 -0800
By Ashley Thompson Modifications getting edgier but industry lacks any health and safety rules in Nova Scotia "Scalpel!" If you’re picturing a doctor right now, think again. Instead, think extreme piercing with very sharp knives. Some of Nova Scotia’s tattoo and piercing parlours are doing more than simply accommodating clients’ requests for in-your-face ink and lip rings — and without government health and safety regulations or inspections. It’s called body modification. In August, Gordon MacDonald, 25, spent two hours belly-up on an examination table at Adept Tattoos & Body Piercing Studio having the skin on his chest carved with a scalpel, and peeled into the shape of an autopsy scar — without anesthetic. A soldier's tradition: tattoos to remember fallen comrades - Sat, 14 Nov 2009 20:00:00 -0800
By Jeremy Schwartz Tributes to those slain in Fort Hood shootings already showing up on skin of survivors. He was the kind of best friend you need when you're 19 and you've just joined the Army during wartime. Pfc. Nic Woodworth of Atlanta said he met Pfc. Aaron Nemelka during basic training about a year ago, and the two became inseparable during those first months of Army life. They bonded over bowling, pool and their pending deployment to Afghanistan. Nemelka, a Utah kid from a Salt Lake City suburb, talked about getting a tattoo of a black rose in honor of a loved one who had recently died. But last week, Nemelka, 19, was among those killed at Fort Hood. Now, Woodworth will be going to Afghanistan without his friend. Woodworth decided to memorialize his friend in permanent ink. Is Harry Potter a Pothead? - Sat, 14 Nov 2009 19:00:00 -0800
By Kat Angus A U.K. tabloid is claiming that Daniel Radcliffe isn’t just using magic and witchcraft to expand his horizons, as the Daily Mirror has published photos that appear to show the Harry Potter star smoking a – gasp – marijuana cigarette! But hasn’t he seen Reefer Madness? That stuff is dangerous! In the photo, taken at friend’s party in North London, Radcliffe is seen holding what the Mirror calls a “spliff,” and one partygoer claims the 20-year-old actor was walking around the party yelling, “I love weed!” Read the complete article: Dose.ca

Branding - Thu, 12 Nov 2009 19:00:00 -0800
Branding is scarification, usually through the application of a heated material (usually metal) to the skin, making a serious burn that eventually becomes a scar. Ideally, a healed branding looks like a pattern of thick raised lines, slightly lighter than skin color (when fully healed). However, the amount of raising or keloiding varies greatly, dependent on a large number of factors. Sometimes they even inset rather than raise. Scarification operates through controlled injury. It is not safe. That said, many things we do every day are not safe either. Practised responsibly by experienced practitioners, scarification of all kinds should fall inside "acceptable risk." Buying Organic Body Jewelry - Mon, 09 Nov 2009 20:00:00 -0800
By Karen L. Hudson Q: I have a question about the safety of organic jewellery. Now I love the look of organic jewellery and am currently stretching my lobes I just have a question about how safe it is. Unlike SSS and the like it can not be autoclaved. I was just wondering how can a buyer be sure they are safe from diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis and the like if the pieces aren't sterile. A: Only wear organic jewelry in a fully healed piercing, don't wear it while sleeping and only buy from reputable companies - all jewelry is brand new and never used on another human so there is no risk of disease. Some of them also require special cleaning or care, so be sure you get all pertinent information on whatever you buy. Read the complete article: About.com

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant's best effect is its romanticism - Sat, 07 Nov 2009 20:00:00 -0800
By Ron Yamauchi The vast success of the Twilight novels, and now their cinematic adaptations, has created an entire entertainment genre: the teen vampire romance thriller. Based on a series of novels, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant bears a certain resemblance to its international-hysteria-inducing predecessor, mainly by depicting monster heroes as angst-ridden high schoolers. But there are considerable differences and, indeed, peculiarities. Where Twilight is unabashedly a girl’s movie, Cirque du Freak caters to boys: more fights, less talk. A seemingly normal fellow, Darren (Chris Massoglia) is a nice kid from a good home who gets good grades. His main problem in life appears to be having an obnoxious friend (Josh Hutcherson). Steve is a Bad Influence, driven by macabre obsessions. Read the complete article: The Georgia Straight
Body modification booming in Germany - Sat, 07 Nov 2009 19:00:00 -0800
Berlin - The practice of decorating the human body known as body modification is booming in Germany right now. Placing hollow tubes called flesh tunnels in ear lobes or deliberately cutting scars into the skin is a growing practice in some sections of society. Body modification is about more than the conventional forms of piercing and tattoos. 'Is a bit more okay?' was a phrase often heard by customers from their butcher. But more people are asking the same question when it comes to their own flesh or skin. Read the complete article: Monsters & Critics
Traditional Indian Uses of Mehndi (Henna) - Fri, 06 Nov 2009 19:00:00 -0800
By Deepak Acharya Mehndi (Lawsonia inermis) belongs to family Lytharaceae and in Sanskrit it is known as Medayantika. The plant is found scarcely in dry deciduous forests in hot and semi arid regions and extensively cultivated as a hedge plant. It is two-meter long when fully grown-up and release of a typical delicate scent is also noted all through the nights. Leaves of Lawsonia inermis yield a colouring matter called “henna" which is reddish brown in colour. Mehndi has great importance in all Eastern marriage ceremony & traditions, and no wedding is absolute without the decoration of the bride's hands and feet. Many brides believe that the deeper the color of the Mehndi, the deeper the love they will receive from their in-laws, in particular the mother-in-law, whose blessing is particularly important to an Indian bride. The Seattle Steampunk Convention - Wed, 04 Nov 2009 20:00:00 -0800
By Melody Kalkowski Steampunk fans from across Alaska were present at Steamcon in Seattle, WA, a steampunk-only convention whose sold-out halls led as an example of the growing popularity of the genre. Since 2007 web searches for the term steampunk have sky rocketed according to Google Trends. The New York Times wrote an article on it in 2008 and as the fashion, art and music industries take notice of it so should Alaskans as the fandom makes its way into the state. The term “steampunk” developed in the 1980s from the literary genre of cyberpunk. Yet the term “punk” would be misleading as some works lack the dystopian elements associated with it. As a genre, steampunk covers many ideas and holds a loose definition as a Victorian era themed work originating in science fiction with possible elements of fantasy or alternate-history, though what makes something “steampunk” is more complicated.
