Hospital matron Jayne Norbury is urging colleagues to protect themselves and their patients against swine flu by getting vaccinated after being sick with the virus for a week.
Man given Community Punishment Order for abusing AandE Staff
Ashley Langley aged 23 of Skelmersdale was given a six-month Community Punishment Order at Southport Magistrates Court last week following his arrest at Southport Accident andamp; Emergency Department in July this year. He was also ordered to pay andpound;65 court costs.
Hospital champions care with new campaign
Care as Care Should Be is a new Southport and Ormskirk hospital campaign to raise awareness of dignity in care. The campaign emphasises improving the overall quality of care and improving the experience of everyone whether they are patients, carers or staff.

Trust again asks for co-operation with smoking policy
Once again, Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is asking patients and visitors to co-operate with its request that they do not smoke on its premises. Since the Trust declared it was going Smokefree in January 2006, most people who smoke have abided by the request to not to do so in the buildings or grounds of both Ormskirk and Southport hospitals. However, there are a small number of people, both patients and visitors who insist on smoking in the grounds, mainly outside the entrances.

Every patient who needed clot busting treatment received it within target time
For someone suffering a heart attack the speed with which they can get access to a particular drug known as thrombolytic treatment can literally be a matter of life and death. Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is one of only three Trusts in the country who were able to give this treatment to every patient who needed it within the target time of 30 minutes after arriving at hospital.
Man fined after verbally abusing hospital staff
A 24 year old man was given a fixed penalty fine by Merseyside Police after being arrested for verbally abusing staff and patients in the Accident andamp; Emergency Department at Southport hospital last week.
Minor Injuries Unit temporarily relocates while refurbishment gets underway
Work gets underway later this month to transform part of Ormskirk andamp; District General Hospital into a new andpound;3million health centre. The refurbishments will make way for the state-of-the-art Primary Care Access Centre, which is due to open towards the end of 2009 as part of NHS Central Lancashireandrsquo;s drive to improve health and healthcare. It will offer brand new services, giving people new facilities on their doorstep which will increase access to treatment and advice.
Free long-term parking at hospitals
Following the introduction of the new car parking system at both Southport and Ormskirk hospitals a number of unforeseen issues have a risen which we have either resolved or are in the process of resolving. However, one issue that has been raised is the cost for anyone who has to attend the hospital several times a week over a prolonged period of time. Although we offer a weekly parking permit for andpound;10 (plus a andpound;5 deposit) which can offer considerable savings, this can still be expensive over a long time.andnbsp;andnbsp;

CHANGES TO THE CAR PARKING SYSTEM

Fund for specialist nurse practitioner started with a Ball
Each year over 310,000 patients will present to health care services in the UK with a fragility fracture. The majority of these fractures occur in the wrist, spine, ankle and hip and usually occur with minimal force. Readmission rate best in the North West
Figures released recently by an independent health watchdog show that once again Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is leading the way among general acute Trusts within the North West.
The end for ‘hospital corners’?
The death-knell of one of the great hospital traditions has been sounded at Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust with the introduction of fitted bed sheets. Gone are the carefully folded andlsquo;hospital cornersandrsquo; and in are new soft, comfortable bedding with no creases, wrinkling or friction and a uniquely designed sheet that reduces pressure on feet and ankles.
Clean sheet for MRSA in last quarter
Patients choosing Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust are choosing one of only seven non-specialist trusts in the country to have achieved a clean sheet with no cases of MRSA Bacteraemia in the December to March quarter. We are still comfortably the best performing trust in the North West and are now in the top five nationally since reporting began.

Healthier hearts, longer lives – number of patients receiving clot-busting treatment within 30 minutes continues to rise
For someone suffering a heart attack the speed with which they can get access to a particular drug known as thrombolytic treatment can literally be a matter of life and death. A heart attack is caused by a blood clot blocking one of the coronary arteries or its branches andamp; the clot busting drug (a thrombolytic) dissolves the clot re-establishing the blood flow to the heart muscle. The sooner the clot is dissolved the less damage there is to the heart muscle.
Staff and patients celebrate first wedding at hospital
Patients and staff alike were celebrating earlier this week, when Sean Pinnington (47) and his fiancandeacute;e Teresa McGhee (38) both from Birchwood, Warrington were married at the North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre at Southport hospital.
Faster care for Southport and Ormskirk hospital’s patients
Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has met its commitment to reduce the time patients wait for treatment. Since March over 90% of patients referred to the Trust started treatment within 18 weeks of referral from their GP.
Patients say Trust continues to improve
In the latest inpatient survey released today, 80% of patients said the care they received was either very good or excellent, 80% said they were always treated with respect and dignity and 77% thought the doctors and nurses worked very well or excellently together. In each case this is an increase on last year.
Cleanest North West Trust again and lowest MRSA figures for over 12 months
The most recently released figures from the Health Protection Agency show our consistent approach to hospital acquired infections continues to pay off and that once again we have the lowest rates of MRSA and C.diff in the North West. During the quarter October to December 2007, Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has had the fewest cases of hospital acquired MRSA in any quarter since September 2006, with only one case. This continues the current downward trend that has been on-going for nearly nine months. For the same period there has also been a fall in the number of cases of clostridium difficile, with a drop from 32 cases to 21 cases.

For the seventh year running, Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has been named among the top performers in the countryandrsquo;s 40 Top Hospitals programme assessed by the countryandrsquo;s leading hospital benchmarking company, CHKS.
Opening times change at Minor Injuries Unit
From Monday 2nd June the weekday opening times at the Minor Injuries Unit at Ormskirk andamp; District General Hospital will be changing to 8am to 8pm. Weekend and Bank holiday times will remain 9am to 5pm.

Patients being seen quicker at hospitals
Patients referred by their GP to either Southport or Ormskirk hospital over the last few months will have noticed something different andndash; they are not having to wait so long for their appointments.
Good infection control is an integral part of the way we operate
An independent review body has said that Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is able to show that good infection control is an integral part of the way it operates. The Healthcare Commission (HCC) is carrying out inspections at 120 Trusts to check compliance with the hygiene code. The visits are unannounced to allow assessment managers to see the hospital as a patient or visitor would see it.
New dialysis unit at Southport and Formby District General Hospital
A new dialysis unit is to open at Southport andamp; Formby District General Hospital by the end of the year. It will have twelve treatment areas, capable of seeing 60 patients a week. It will mean the end of having to travel long distances for both existing and new patients who will now receive life saving dialysis closer to home.
Donations to Oncology and Spinal Units
It was with great thanks that donations to the Oncology Day Unit and the Spinal Unit were received just before Christmas from local solicitor Rob Fletcher. Intrepid Rob had raised most of the andpound;5,750 from sponsorship for completing a 735 mile cycle trip to his nephewandrsquo;s wedding in Jelina Gora, Poland.
Donations from Hospital Shop
Over the years, most of the wards and departments at Ormskirk Hospital have benefited from generous donations from the Hospital Shop. For nearly 20 years Audrey Stuart has run the shop together with her husband Ron and a band of very willing helpers.

In response to the article in Mondayandrsquo;s Liverpool Daily Post in which it states andldquo;Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has already recorded enough cases to exceed its annual expected levelandrdquo;, we believe this needs to be put into context.
Violence against staff
Figures released this week by the NHS Counter Fraud and Security Management Service (CFSMS), have shown a very slight reduction in the number of reported physical assaults against staff at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust. There was just 1 fewer than the previous year, with 60 physical assaults being reported during 01/04/06 to 31/03/07.
Trust has lowest MRSA and Clostridium Difficile numbers in North West
Figures released on 1st November by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) show that Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has the lowest number of cases of clostridium difficile, commonly known as C.diff, and of MRSA among North West general acute hospitals. In the quarter April to June 2007, the Trust had just 23 cases of C.diff and 6 cases of MRSA infection.

Macmillan lung nurses in Southport and Ormskirk during Novemberandrsquo;s Lung Cancer Awareness Month are urging people not to delay in getting checked out if they have a cough that wonandrsquo;t go away or unusual chest pains. Sue Summerfield andamp; Janet Thompson, Macmillan lung nurses based at Southport and Formby District General Hospital are holding information awareness displays at both Southport and Ormskirk District General Hospitals during November. They are among Macmillan Cancer Supportandrsquo;s 184 lung cancer nurses.
Healthcare Commission Standards
The Healthcare Commissions latest ratings in the Annual Health check have shown that Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust have either fully met or achieved all bar three of the standards against which Trusts are measured to judge Quality of Service.

Non-executive Director re-appointed to the Board
Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is pleased to announce that Mrs Jackie Citarella has been re-appointed as a Non-executive Director of the Trust Board from 1 September 2007. Mrs Citarella first joined the Trust as a Non-executive Director in September 2003, and she has been re-appointed to serve until August 2011.
Celebration at Neonatal Unit as baby reaches 100 days old
Celebrations were in order recently at the Neonatal Unit at Ormskirk andamp; District General Hospital when one of their residents reached the ripe old age of 100 days. andldquo;We were concerned she wouldnandrsquo;t reach 100 hours when she was bornandrdquo;, said Jodie, mother of baby Jaxx.
Four more beds for Spinal Cord Injury Care at Southport
The North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre at Southport andamp; Formby District General Hospital has just opened an additional four low dependency beds. These will help ease the pressure on the Centre and enable it to carry out operations and procedures for patients who might have either had a longer wait or had to go else where.
‘Follow the yellow brick road’ to the children’s ward
Children can now join Dorothy, the Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow on their way to the ward thanks to a mural painted by Southport based artist Clare Wright. The characters from the Wizard of Oz show the children how to andlsquo;follow the yellow brick roadandrsquo; to the unit.

Excellent achievements in diagnostic wait time reductions
The Government has quite clearly stated that by the end of 2008 all patients should have to wait no longer than 18 weeks from referral by their GP to their first treatment at hospital. This is to include outpatient appointments, diagnostic tests and anything else needed to be done before the procedure or operation is carried out.

Mighty mops help Trust keep Superbugs at bay
The introduction of new microfibre mops and wipes is helping Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust stay ahead in the battle against hospital superbugs such as MRSA and Clostridium difficile. Following extensive trials at both Ormskirk and Southport hospitals, we have introduced over 50 Vileda SWEP microfibre systems at both Trust hospitals, including mops, wipes and trolleys.
New Theatre opens at Ormskirk Hospital
Following the move of Ophthalmic surgery to Ormskirk andamp; District General Hospital at the beginning of April a new operating theatre has been built bringing the total of theatres at Ormskirk to seven. andpound;1million has been spent converting offices into a new state of the art facility for ophthalmic surgery.

In response to recent articles about the increase prices of telephone calls from the Patientline Service in hospitals, Andrew Green, Facilities Manager has made the following statement. andldquo;The pricing of phone calls from Patientline Services is set by the company and has not been the subject of negotiation with the Trust. We do not benefit financially in any way from the bedside Patientline Services.
Hospital shop has its finger on the pulse and is the toast of the restaurant
The pre-operative team and restaurant staff would like to express their thanks to Audrey and Ron Stuart, who run the hospital shop at Ormskirk andamp; District General Hospital. Audrey and Ron donate all the profit from the shop to various departments around the hospital and on this occasion they gave andpound;630 to the pre-operative team and andpound;875 to the restaurant.
Fletchers Solicitors support Spinal Unit with £19,000 donation
A generous donation from Southport-based law firm Fletchers Solicitors has enabled Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trustandrsquo;s Regional Spinal Injuries Centre to purchase vital rehabilitation equipment.
End of an era for Southport Health Services
The move of Audiology, ENT and the Eye Unit from the Southport General Infirmary at the end of this month will mean the end of General Hospital services on the Scarisbrick New Road site after a period of some 112 years.
Audiology, ENT and the Eye Unit are moving from the SGI
The Eye Unit, ENT service and Audiology service are moving from Southport General Infirmary. The last clinics will take place at Southport General Infirmary on Thursday 29th March. Outpatient clinics will take place either at Southport andamp; Formby District General Hospital or Ormskirk andamp; District General Hospital and you will be offered a choice as applicable. A confirmation letter will be sent to patients prior to their next attendance.
Donation to Breast Care Unit
In memory of their daughter, Heather, Ann andamp; Bob Abram, have raised over andpound;4,600 for the benefit of local breast cancer sufferers. Most local patients who are diagnosed with breast cancer are seen at Clatterbridge Hospital by Consultant Clinical Oncologist Dr Sun Myint who also sees patients at Southport Hospital. The money is to be to be shared between Clatterbridge Hospital and The Marina Dalglish Appeal, which also raises money for breast care.
Trust hosts consultant exams
Consultantsandnbsp; Dr. John Horsley and Dr Khalid Binymin, a Royal College of Physicians Tutor, made history for the hospital Trust by hosting the prestigious PACES examination on behalf of the Royal College of Physicians of London.

Every day the Trust lends patients pieces of equipment to help with their recovery. Every day we ask them to bring them back when they have finished with them. Every day some of this equipment gets put into cupboards-under-the-stairs, backs of wardrobes, behind sofas and into garden sheds. We know this because unfortunately they do not come back to us. So please, can we have them back?
Help raise money for mural for the children’ ward
Any one who has had to visit the childrenandrsquo;s ward at Ormskirk andamp; District General Hospital will know that although the corridor to the ward is very clean and bright, it is also very plain. Hopefully it wonandrsquo;t be for much longer as the childrenandrsquo;s charity Mediquip for Kids has donated a substantial amount towards the painting of a mural by local artist Clare Wright. But staff are still having to raise andpound;2,000 towards the cost.
Trust maintains its position as top for cleanliness
Figures published on Tuesday last week show that Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust still has the lowest rate of MRSA Bloodstream infection of any general acute hospital in the country.andnbsp;andnbsp; Over the five and a half years that Trusts have had to report figures to the Department of Health, the Trust has reported the lowest percentage rate of any General Acute Trust in the country and a total of only 57 cases in the whole of that time.

Non-executive Director re-appointed to the Board
Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust is pleased to announce that Mr Michael Eastwood has been re-appointed as a Non-executive Director of the Trust Board. Mr Eastwood, who lives in Southport first joined the Trust as a Non-executive Director in December 2002, and he has been re-appointed to serve until November 2010.
New Digital Flouroscopy facilities at Southport Hospital
A new Digital Fluoroscopy room has opened at Southport andamp; Formby District General Hospital. The room will be used to perform contrast examinations which include Barium Enemas and Swallows, ERCP's and Urodynamics.

Mayor and Mayoress visit Regional Spinal Injuries Centre
On Thursday 7th December the Mayor and Mayoress of Sefton, Councillor Tommy Mann and Mrs Jean Lilley, visited the Regional Spinal Injuries Centre at Southport andamp; Formby District General Hospital. Robotic help in the operating theatre
Mr Sean Vesey, Consultant Urologist, at Southport andamp; Formby District General Hospital has a new robot assistant. The new machine, affectionately nicknamed by operating theatre staff as andlsquo;Robbie the Robotandrsquo;, greatly facilitates surgery by improving the surgeons view, reducing operating time, and freeing up a member of the operating team.

Hospital tests its Emergency Plans
On Friday 6th October staff from Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust were joined by colleagues from the Ambulance service to take part in an Emergency planning exercise. Patient Transport Services
Following a review of Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust policy on Patient Transport Services, it has been found that a number of patients are using the Services when they are not entitled to do so. From the 1st October 2006, the existing policy will be more strictly enforced.
Trust's management of medicines is excellent, says health watchdog
In a report issued last week, Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust has been scored as excellent for the management of medicines. We are only one of 18 hospitals in England to have received this score. The report issued by the Healthcare Commission follows the audit of 173 acute hospital trusts, which focused on the three themes of patient focus, clinical focus and efficiency and capability. Through consideration of a range of indicators the assessment gives a view of how well the trust is managing and improving its medicine related services.
Trust is still top for cleanliness
Figures published on Monday show that Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust still has the lowest rate of MRSA Bloodstream infection of any general acute hospital in the country. Over the five years that Trusts have had to report figures to the Department of Health, the Trust has reported the lowest percentage rate of any General Acute Trust in the country having a total of only 52 cases during that time.
Trust launches phase two of cleanyourhands campaign
According to the National Patient Safety Agencyandrsquo;s cleanyourhands campaign; andldquo;andhellip;improving hand hygiene goes back to the basics of patient care. There is no simple way of reducing health care associated infection but improving hand hygiene compliance can have a significant impact.andrdquo; Southport andamp; Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust was a leader in the campaign when it launched in February last year, and we have just launched phase two of the campaign.
