Exciting News From Bing and Yahoo! (Again) - Mon, 30 Aug 2010 21:53:00 GMT

Last week we shared the exciting fact that we had completed the migration of web search results for our search alliance with Yahoo!.

Today we reached another important milestone as we will be inviting Yahoo! Search Marketing to begin their transition to Microsoft Advertising adCenter in the US and Canada.

This means we expect the paid search transition to be complete by the end of October.

It’s been a busy summer, and we are excited about all the great progress we have made working hand in hand with Yahoo!

We are looking forward to a smooth transition this fall, and more great innovation coming from Bing, adCenter and the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance.

Satya Nadella - Senior Vice President, Online Services Division

Once the transition is complete, we will continue our work to roll out this unified search and advertising marketplace internationally, driving great benefits to consumers, publishers and advertisers.

Bing for Mobile comes to your Verizon Android - Mon, 30 Aug 2010 15:00:00 GMT

Today we are happy to announce the first official Bing for Mobile Android App available to Verizon customers. You can now download the free Bing App from your Verizon Wireless Android phones’ Marketplace.

The app homepage features the Bing image of the day, complete with clickable hotspots that you can explore and discover related trivia. Did you miss one of the latest images? Don’t worry; you can still swipe through up to 7 days’ worth of Bing images.

clip_image001

Are you a visual person? Try the image search feature that has endless scrolling results (Tip: this also works for any search result). Then easily swipe through image previews and click straight through to the image host site.

clip_image002

Now, do you see the mic option on the homepage? Our investment in voice search continues in our Android App and works great for searches like map locations as well as web search. This works especially well when looking for “Instant answers” which give you quick and relevant answers for things like movies, stock quotes, flight status and local listings.

Just say “movies,” for a quick result of movie listings, theaters and show times nearby, or say the flight information you are looking for, we will show you the departure, arrival, and other relevant information such as traffic, weather, news, and hotels details.

clip_image003

Voice search is also great when it comes to your local business listings. Give it a try, even something complex, hold the phone to your ear and speak, or press the mic button—it’s that simple.

The Android app also has a pretty smooth mapping feature. First, Bing will automatically find your current location. You can then easily discover new places by category such as restaurants, banks, theaters and you can choose whether you want walking or driving directions. Swipe through each step of your directions, and check out how fast the map pans and zooms. For times when you only have one hand free and can’t pinch, there is the handy zoom-out button.

map

There are a bunch of other features we’d love to tell you about, like local listing reviews, ratings and news. But rather than drone on about them, just download the app from your Android’s Marketplace, give it a spin and let us know what you think.

Access the Great Food and Music of Portland with Bing - Tue, 24 Aug 2010 20:00:00 GMT

Earlier this year we launched A New Entertainment Experience for Bing, and part of those new features was a new way to really Experience the music with Bing. We have found that Bing shares a passion and enthusiasm for music with music fans everywhere and today we are excited to be partnering with Alpha Broadcasting in Portland, OR, on their new live performance venue called The Bing Lounge.

The Bing Lounge will bring Rose City residents a line-up of performances to enable the community to come together and experience great music, sports and culture. In case you are not able to make it to The Bing Lounge, all of the performances will be available exclusively on Bing Video in HD.

The lounge will host up to 80 musical performances, a monthly medical speaker series with OHSU, a quarterly Business Decision-Maker series, visiting and local athlete outings and much more. The lineup is starting today with Five For Fighting, so make sure to check back for the links to all the latest HD videos.

Beyond music, Portland is also recognized as the street food capital of the world. What better way to embrace and celebrate all of the unique and numerous food cart options to the foodies of Portland than with The Bing Food Cart Finder, which is available free at Bing.com. This app offers a unique experience that allows you to easily navigate the Portland food cart scene on your PC or on the go. It will give you details on more than 250 food carts in the Portland area, including editorial reviews, photos and menus to help you decide what and where to grab your next meal.

Access to some of the best music and food is what Portland is all about and we hope with The Bing Lounge and The Bing Food Cart Finder you are able to experience the food and music that make Portland such a great entertainment city.

Exciting News From Bing and Yahoo! - Tue, 24 Aug 2010 16:00:00 GMT

In our last update we shared that we had begun testing Bing results in Yahoo! search as we move forward with our transition.

Today I am happy to share that Bing is powering Yahoo!’s search results in the US and Canada (English only for now, the other languages will come in the weeks and months ahead).

So what’s next? We continue to work hard on the migration to adCenter, and are optimistic about completing this phase later this fall. As we have said all along, our primary goal is to provide advertisers with a quality transition experience in 2010, while being mindful of the holiday season.

This is a great milestone for Bing and Yahoo! and our customers, and we are happy to report the transition has gone smoothly and we feel great about the progress our search alliance has been making over the summer.

Local search on m.bing.com - Tue, 17 Aug 2010 16:54:00 GMT

When you’re out and about and need to find somewhere to go, you probably want to search around where you are right now. The Local section on m.bing.com does just that. Using the GPS on your phone (or nearby cell towers), Bing shows you a list of suggestions based their popularity, your location, and the time of day. You can choose the radius for your search, narrowing to .5 miles for congested areas. Searching in the morning? Bing may show you coffee shops and shopping. At night, the suggestions may switch to entertainment and pubs. Best of all, you can display all listings on a single map.

On the home screen, click the “Local” button. You’ll see a list of places nearby. You can dive into a particular category, like Restaurants, or choose to see all local categories.

clip_image002 clip_image004 clip_image005

Find something you like? Save them all to your Favorites using the “Save” button. Now click “What’s nearby” to find a list of places within a particular distance range. Once you’ve saved a few local listings, go to your Favorites page (either from a local detail page, or from the home page). Select the ones you want, and you can see them all on a map, or send an email to friends with all the details.

clip_image008 clip_image009

So whether you are looking for that local coffee shop or pub Bing for Mobile can help you find what you are looking for and even map out your route.

New Bing App for iPhone is Here!

Using your social network to search with your Bing for Mobile iPhone app - Tue, 10 Aug 2010 17:00:00 GMT

Do you ever find yourself standing in front of the movie theater trying to figure out what movie to go to? Or how about you are in the car with friends looking for a place to eat. Wouldn’t it be helpful to hear what your friends are saying about a movie, restaurants or a product while you are on the go? As highlighted in the Bing For iPhone Update blog post there is a feature called Social search, where you can search through your Facebook and Twitter accounts on your phone and see combined status updates from your friends. If there is an instant answer available, we’ll show you that first, followed by social results.

Here is how to get social results:

  • From the home page, click “Social”
  • Then connect your accounts
  • Now when you search for anything, relevant results and your friends’ social network mentions will also appear
  • Finally if you find something you like using the app, you can easily share it with your network on Facebook, Twitter, or through email
clip_image003 clip_image004

This social feature comes in handy when you’re looking for movies or restaurants and want both information from the web and opinions from your social network. Now you can make that decision on the go that much easier.

Answering your questions with Bing and Wolfram Alpha - Tue, 10 Aug 2010 13:00:00 GMT

Have your kids ever asked you a question for a school paper or homework that you wish you knew? Have you given an answer that you “think” you remember from your days in school, knowing that the information you were about to give might be very outdated? Now, with the latest release of new Bing answers through our collaboration with Wolfram|Alpha, you can get access to more types of answers quickly and confidently.

For example, maybe your child is doing a report on France and they need to find the country’s GDP or the capital, go to Bing and type in “gdp of France” or “what is the capital of France” or how about those science homework questions that you think you know but you just need to make sure, like what is the boiling point of water? You can also use Bing to instantly compare geographical information, like comparing the current population in India to that of China or even how their literacy rates compare. Bing and Wolfram | Alpha make finding the answers to these common questions that much easier by proving this information to you right in the search results.

clip_image001

Another helpful new answer with this release is dates. I know on more than one occasion I am trying to plan my family schedule and need to know what date a holiday will fall on in the future. Now, you can type into the Bing search box a query like “When is Thanksgiving next year” or even just the word “Christmas” to get the actual day of the week that it will take place.

clip_image002

The next time you are confronted with the task of knowing or finding the answer to help with homework or even if you are just looking for the next time you need to cook the holiday dinner give Bing a try. The team is continuously adding new data and answers from Wolfram|Alpha to help get you the information you are looking for faster.

Bing Integration into Windows Live Messenger Beta - Thu, 29 Jul 2010 09:46:00 GMT

With the latest version of Messenger, you can now bring Bing into your conversations in a few exciting new ways.

The first way you will be able to do this is through contextual linking. When a term is recognized, a green dashed line appears under that term. When you click on that word, you are given links from Bing to websites, photos, and videos which you can add to your conversation.

clip_image001

clip_image002

Some of the categories of content that Messenger and Bing recognize include:

· Brands

· Bands and Singers

· Places

· Famous Movies

· Famous people

clip_image002[1]

The other way is to use the information from Bing as a search and share experience. You are able to add content that is indexed and searched by Bing directly into your conversation. Let’s say you want to share a video with a friend you are having a conversation with over IM, below are the steps to embed the video:

· From the IM toolbar you select: Share video from Bing.

· Enter your search term in the Bing search box

· Click the magnifying glass

· Pick the video you want to share

clip_image002[1]

Now you can share information from Bing right inside your Messenger conversation. You can download the Messenger Beta for Windows 7 and Windows Vista here. So, give it a try and let us know what you think.

For more information on this and some of the other new Windows Live Messenger features make sure to check out their team blog post.

Introducing Bing Highlights for Safari - Wed, 28 Jul 2010 13:25:00 GMT

Last month, we had the pleasure of announcing that, in conjunction with Apple, Bing would be included as one of the search engine choices within Safari.

Today, we’d like to introduce our first extension for Safari: Bing Highlights.

Bing Highlights brings intelligent, contextually sensitive information to the web pages you’re reading. Using it is easy: just highlight text on a web page. Bing Highlights will recognize interesting information (or “entities” in information science-speak) and offer you some smart choices.

For example, here’s what may happen if you highlight a U.S. formatted address:

clip_image001

You can interact with the map in the pane, and get driving directions.

If you highlight some text in a foreign language, you can get translations. You can even hear the text spoken by clicking on the icons.

Styled-BingHighlights-Translate

You can also get up-to-date flight status information by highlighting a flight number:

clip_image003

And, of course, you can easily get search results from Bing for any text that you select. This extension helps bring the power of Bing one step closer to your fingertips.

Click to download Bing Highlights from Apple’s Safari Extension Gallery. It works with Safari 5.0.1 or newer, for both Mac and PC.

Creating this extension was fun, and we are excited to continue working closely with Apple in bringing visually compelling Bing experiences to Safari.

On behalf of the entire Bing Highlights team, I hope you enjoy our product!

Dennis Cheung – Bing, Senior Program Manager Lead
